Introduction
Nepal Participatory Action Network (NEPAN) is a member-based organization, formed in January 1995 by a group of likeminded development practitioners in Nepal. NEPAN envisages a situation in Nepal where the poor and underprivileged people become the main focus for sustained, equitable and humanistic development. It promotes and facilitates participatory development approaches for the empowerment of the people through research, advocacy, lobbying and capacity building activities. We believe in sharing skills and experiences without any boundaries.
NEPAN is registered with the District Administration Office, Kathmandu, Nepal as a non-governmental (not-for-profit) organization and is affiliated with the Social Welfare Council of Nepal. Currently, its members include 330 individual members and 40 institutional members.
NEPAN's Core Values

Mutual respect: NEPAN recognizes the innate dignity of all human beings, the value of cultural diversity and the right to exercise choice.
Equity: NEPAN believes that any use of advantages for selfish ends should be foregone in favor of the present and future good of the society.
Empathy with the poor: NEPAN believes in empathy with the poor to foster social justice and equity.
Pluralism: NEPAN respects different points of views and supports the process of democratization at all levels.
Secularism: NEPAN is a secular and non-partisan organization, which does not discriminate on the ground of gender, religion, caste and creed and party- politics.

In NEPAN, we believe that the sharing of skills and experiences without any boundaries. The experiences, skills and commitment of institutions as well as individual members in sharing, building up the experiences are our most important resources. The major activities are as follows:

- To organise symposia, conferences, workshops and meetings to promote and advocate principles and share experiences of participatory action.
- To prepare and regularly update a resource directory of institutions and individuals, who can be available as resources for people and institutions needing assistance and support in participatory action and development, and to assist in making appropriate linkages as and when possible.
- To organise training programs for furthering the development of skills and knowledge of trainers and practitioners as and when needed, especially when such trainings are not already being offered or can not be offered by any one member institution or individual and when such trainings and workshops will strengthen and bring synergy among members.
- To undertake methodological research, directly or through individual and institutional members, with the view of making advances in the understanding and practice of participatory development.
- To regularly publish and disseminate news, views and experiences for the Network members.
- To provide a common platform for those concerned about participation of poor people in the process of development.
- To provide advice and necessary support in developing understanding and skills and in practicing participatory development.
- To develop linkages with similar institutions and networks in the country and internationally to effectively achieve the aims and objectives of NEPAN.
- To establish a specialized excellent multi-media and document resource centre covering the whole subject of participatory development.
NEPAN's Activities
In NEPAN, we believe that the sharing of skills and experiences without any boundaries. The experiences, skills and commitment of institutions as well as individual members in sharing, building up the experiences are our most important resources. The major activities are as follows:
- Supports and complements its members' efforts in participatory development by organising symposia, conferences, workshops, and meetings to promote and advocate principles and share experiences of participatory action.
- Organises training programmes and workshops to develop the skills and knowledge needed to ensure the participation of people in their own development.
- Undertakes methodological research with the aim of making advances in the understanding and practice of participatory approaches.
- Regularly publishes and disseminates news, views, and experiences related to participatory action and development.
- Provides advice and necessary support in order to facilitate the participatory development.
- Networks and cooperates with similar institutions and networks, both in Nepal and internationally.
